Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection is now recognized as a chronic illness. There are several classes approved by USFDA of antiretroviral agents that act on different stages of the HIV life-cycle. The different drugs have different mechanism of action and adverse effects. Treatment has been so successful that in many parts of the world, HIV has become a constant condition wherein movement to AIDS is progressively rare.
